Beamshots - 5

English version

We shoot some other flashlights a week after Beamshots-4 (21 March 2009)
Settings were the same: Photos were taken at one site with identical shoot settings:
Distance to far wall: 50 meters.
Focal distance: 18mm, crop 1.6, shutter speed: 4 seconds, aperture 4.5, ISO 200, white balance - Daylight (5500K).

But there are some differences compared to Beamshots-4:

  • There is no snow on ice, as it was a week ago. That means, when you compare Beamshots-5 images to Beamshots-4, do not take care of floor brightness: it's completely different. Thigs that remain comparable are walls, pillars, ceiling. We've shot some torhes both weeks (Nitecore D10,Extreme,Ex10) so you can realize the difference.
  • This stage is tagged "Part 2" inside image.
  • There was light-reflecting tape glued to far wall at Beamshots-4 shooting, but it is not here in Beamshots-5.

Again, to simplify comparison of thrower or powerful lights, we're also providing a serie of images with light amount divided by 4 (exposure correction EV-2).
For flashlights that imaged within dynamic range of camera, exposure compensation was performed usin software RAW converter only.
For 300 000 candlepower lamp exposure correction was set in place by shooting multiple images with decreasing shutter speed.

To simplify comparison of low modes or low-output lights we also provide EV+2 correction images (which means light amount multiplied 4 times). Here all the images were generated by software RAW converter. That led to fact that dim lights, that were totally black even in RAW image, remain black in these EV+2 images. But who cares? :)
Here is a table for easy evaluation of light amount. We can simply set here that dividing shutter speed by N factor is equal to dividing flashlight brightness by same N factor. EV+2 - shutter speed multiplied by 4.
EV-1 - shutter speed divided by 2
EV-2 - shutter speed divided by 4.
EV-3 - shutter speed divided by 8.
EV-4 - shutter speed divided by 16.
EV-4.3 - shutter speed divided by 20.

If someone needs further digging into truth of comparing throwers, we also provide center part of image cropped without resizing. That is also available in EV+2 and EV-2 corrections.

Below come main series only. Other images can be downloaded in archives below.

Main series EV-2
Light divided by 4. Use these images to compare powerful lights.
Main series
Normal light amount. That is what you can see below.
Main series EV+2
Light amplified by 4. Use these to compare low modes or low-output lights.
Center crop EV-2
Light divided by 4. Use these images to compare throwers. You can also compare width of beam.
Center crop
Normal light amount. Compare throwers.
Center crop EV+2
Light amplified by 4. Use these to compare low modes of throwers.

Nitecore

It's very intetesting to look at "warming" of alkaline cells.
These batteries were cooled down to some degrees below 0°C (32°F) in my car for a week.
Shots were taken each 5 minutes, as current warmed up the cell.

Lithium cells require no warming.
It is clearly visible that Nitecore D10 brightness on 14500 cells is significantly higher (about 180lm) than on alkalines (about 130lm).
So we can say that manufacturer underrates outputs (it is declared that these flashlights output 130lm max.)

We were impressed by Icon flashlight: It can really throw to 50m. That's unusual to professional headlamps.

Fenix Headband equipped with two Fenix LD20 flashlights is a really usable device.
For close distances, it is also some sort of shadowless light.
400mW laser beam is also clearly visible.

Three 1W LEDs in Camelion flashlights should give 3 watts total :)

GP Discovery is a big 4xD-batteries krypton flashlight. Focus is cool, but light is almost unusable due to its size. Similar "Kosmos" flashlight have a 10-watt halogen that, we can say, throws to 50m. But that weird dark spot in center makes this light unusable also.

Huge krypton lamp labeled "300 000" candlepowers. Brightness and focusing make it usable for far distances. But that weight and size makes it completely nonportable :)
